sweet peas

We were in Stockholm over the weekend. Just a 1 hour 50 minute journey from our home, but so lovely to get away for 36 hours, see new vistas, stay in a hotel and have time and peace to paint. I’m so blessed to have a husband who can sit with his iPad, quite happily, while I paint and draw to my heart’s content.

This time I had a couple of photos on my iPad to paint. Both were manipulated by my Hipstamatic app, changing colours and shadows and contrast into something interesting. Here’s the first one. You can click on any of the pictures to enlarge them.

Here’s the first picture of a vase of Sweet Peas which are past their prime (just look at the water, yuck. But an interesting colour to add to the painting!). So I began with a piece of kraft paper from a scrapbooking pad. I glued down some torn gelliprints and covered the whole surface with some Clear Gesso, which then dried.

Then I sketched up the basic lines with a Faber Castell Watercolur pencil called Ivory…

Next I mixed some watercolours, gouache and some watercolour pencils and began filling in some of the background and some of the red flowers…

I continued mixing different greens, and adding more flowers…

When the paint had dried (I used a hairdryer), I began adding more scribbly pencil marks…

Here are some close-ups…
