seed pods

My sister sent me an amazing photo of some seed pods that were just about to burst. I played around with the photo in Hipstamatic and changed the colour and the contrast.

So it was time to draw and paint it!
I chose a piece of kraft scrapbooking paper with a printed pattern on it. Then I took a bright pink brush pen and drew the basic lines. The black printed lines still show up in the finished painting, but I love that effect.

So then I brought out my Ivory watercolour pencil and drew over the pink pen lines before they dried. The pink went electric pink! After that I started adding Daniel Smith Transparent Pyrrole Orange watercolour (my FAVOURITE Orange watercolour), some greens, turquoises and then a purple watercolour pencil.

When I had added paint, watercolour pencils and acrylic markers onto the leaves and pods, I felt I needed more vibrancy. So out came the Sennelier Oil Pastels. I love them so much. They are smooth and buttery and like beautiful creamy lipsticks. I have bought so many of them now (I fill the stash regularly) so I have many of the subtle “in-between” colours. Oil pastels really pop out of the painting. Some of the areas I rubbed the pastels with my finger, in other areas I literally drew circles and dots with them…
